A Brown Girl's Guide to Medical School Admissions
Work and Activities Section: Introduction
The medical school application is advertised as being a holistic review and one of the things that they review is your activities and extracurriculars. In all, you will have 15 spaces to put in information about your extracurriculars (these can also include publications and special awards). For each activity, you have to provide a 700 character description and then you also have to select your top 3 "most meaningful activities" and write an additional 1325 characters about them. Generally you choose your clinical experience activity, research, and one leadership activity as your top three.
What Information Do I Need For Each Activity On My Application?
- Completed Start Date and Completed End Date (Month and Year)
- Let's say you volunteered at the hospital three separate times (it could have been under three different opportunities that were all hospital volunteering for example). You can combine them under this one activity and have three additional start dates to account for that.
- Total Completed Hours
- Based on the date range you gave above, how many hours have you completed in that time? Don't add how many hours you expect or anticipate to get in this range.
- Anticipated Start Date and Anticipated End Date (Month and Year)
- Total Anticipated Hours
- Information For Your Supervisor (Name, Email, Phone Number, Address)
What Activities Should I Be Involved In?
There are several types of activities you should be involved in, but these are some areas that are essential: Clinical Hours, Research, Shadowing, Leadership, Tutoring, Non-Hospital Volunteering. There is more information about the specific activities needed below.
